What has made it possible for the Star Wars universe to keep expanding for nearly 50 years? What ties the new Fallout TV-series to games that were a huge success years ago? How does the Bridgerton series connect to both its spin-off show and immersive real-life events? And how do the Black Panther and Spider-Man films stay linked to the first Thor movie, along with the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe? The answer is storyworlds!
A storyworld is a thoughtfully crafted universe where characters, locations, values, and relationships interconnect. It includes not just the physical environment but also the rules, cultures, and societies that define how characters interact in the world. A well-developed storyworld has its own logic, history, and context, serving as a strong foundation for many different stories while maintaining a cohesive identity that audiences recognise.
In today’s dynamic media landscape, a well-designed storyworld is key. It allows creators to expand across different media, platforms, and target groups, and crossmedia storytelling become easier, enhancing the audience's experience and level of immersiveness.
In this hands-on workshop, we’ll look at existing storyworlds and then you’ll start creating your own. You'll leave equipped with tools and techniques to keep developing afterwards.
By the end of the workshop, Søren & Gio, who graduated from Games this summer and are now part of the ITU NextGen startup hub, will share how they’re building a strong storyworld to support the development of their project.
Drinks, snacks and dinner will be served for the event.
This workshop is for everyone! There are no requirements for participating.
Wether you're enrolled in a games or interaction design programme, have a dream of writing a fantasy novel once, or just have a curiosity for fictional worlds, you are more than welcome to join and you will fit right in.
Location: Room 2A52 at ITU (New room!)
Time: 16:00-18:00
The workshop will be facilitated by Charlotte from ITU NextGen, who has a BA in Production Design from the Royal Academy and studied at the European Cross Media Academy.
Charlotte has extensive experience as a production and costume designer for short films and theatre productions, and was part of the creative team on a feature film. Additionally, she has worked as a designer and creative director on conceptual photoshoots, led storytelling workshops for photographers, and taught costume design. Her expertise also extends to visual storytelling on social media.
A few years ago, she transitioned from design to innovation and is now a part of ITU NextGen. She loves finding fresh ways to approach creative challenges and exploring new methods for working with creativity. In her spare time, she enjoys building storyworlds and writing.
